The Nunagal, Ngugi and Goenpul people of Minjerribah and Moorgumpin have always considered themselves as one and this tradition is reflected in the formation and existence of the Elders-in-Council Corporation.
The Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders-in-Council Aboriginal Corporation (MMEIC) was created as a vehicle for preserving, recording, communicating and teaching all persons, particularly the young, about the language and culture of Minjerribah and Moorgumpin, MMEIC is a legally registered and incorporated community based organisation, firstly under the Federal Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976, and then, by regulation, under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006.
The Corporation was first formed in 1993 and has fully maintained the conditions of its incorporation since that time. It is governed by an annually elected Board of Directors of 9 persons led by an Executive consisting of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer
The current Chairperson of the Corporation is (Aunty) Margaret Iselin who has held this office since 1994.
Since its formation in 1993, Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders in Council Aboriginal Corporation has played a key role in the preservation and maintenance of Aboriginal cultural heritage, and the provision of cultural and educational services to visiting local and international students - from mainland schools and universities to the professions, including health, scientific and international business sectors. MMEIC currently provides cultural awareness and education services to over 6000 participants per annum.
